![]() ![]() When it came out a little over a year ago, Fellow’s Ode grinder was all the buzz among professional and amateur baristas alike - so much so that it prompted associate editor Louis Cheslaw to try it out and write an extremely favorable review, noting in particular that at its very loudest, the grinder sounds “like crumpling up a newspaper.”īut its appeal goes beyond noise control. And while they note that it’s not the easiest to take apart to clean, most of the pieces are dishwasher-safe and it stores well - retangular and compact with a place to wrap the cord underneath.īlade style: Burr | Noise level: Quiet | Price: $$ And while I only used mine only once a month or so (I often buy pre-ground beans), Strategist writer Erin Schwartz has used the same model nearly every day for more than five years and says that “it’s kind of incredible that it hasn’t broken or shown any signs of serious wear and tear yet.” They like that the top container can fit a standard-size bag of beans, so they don’t have to waste pantry space on leftovers. It’s quite intuitive to use: You simply fill the chamber with beans, set the dial to any of the 18 settings between fine and coarse grind, set the number of cups you are planning to brew (though you won’t need this if you pre-weigh the amount of beans you use in the first place), and press start. ![]() “It’s intuitive and performs wonderfully,” he says, “grinding from fine espresso to the most coarse setting for French press or cold brew.” (The Encore, in fact, has 40 grind settings, so you can easily adjust to whatever you’re looking for.) While he acknowledges it can be a little loud - or a “touch chatty,” in his words - Foos says that’s to be expected for a grinder made of plastic and designed for the home.īlade style: Burr | Noise level: Loud | Price: $īefore I got my hands on the Baratza, this was the entry-level grinder I had for about a year - one of the most affordable on the market with burr-style blades. “When you have to replace the burrs every few years, they make it incredibly easy to do so,” he says.Įlliott Foos, director of coffee at Daymoves in Brooklyn, told us that he used the Encore at work when he previously ran the coffee shop attached to chef Flynn McGarry’s Lower East Side restaurant Gem. Humberto Ricardo, founder of Third Rail Coffee, adds that Baratza machines are “designed to be repaired instead of thrown away should something break, which is good for my wallet and for the planet.” And speaking of repairs, Pratt noted Baratza’s great customer service. I find it easy to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the detachable parts before I store it. In general, my biggest qualm with coffee grinders is the mess they make, but this one has nicely angled sides on the grind chamber that allow for neat pouring. It takes a couple of rounds to grind a full bag of beans (how I prefer to do it - as opposed to per serving) but works quickly at about a minute per turn. The machine took me no more than five minutes to set up, and the switches - one to set the grind size and another to turn it on and off - were easy to understand. In my own testing, I found the same to be true. “It’s simple to use and super-consistent,” Lareau says. Some favor its higher-end models (more on a couple of those below), but nearly a dozen of the coffee aficionados we spoke with recommended this more affordable option, highlighting its quality performance and solid build - especially for the price. If you’re still not quite convinced a coffee grinder is something you should put so much hard-earned money toward (ahem, me), don’t worry: We’ve included a few more affordable options that are still very much pro-approved.īlade style: Burr | Noise level: Loud | Price: $$Īs a brand, Baratza came up in our reporting more often than any other. So to figure out which models are worth the investment, we asked baristas, roasters, and coffee-shop owners about the versions they keep on their own kitchen counters (and sometimes in their suitcases because apparently good coffee never takes a vacation). Unfortunately, most decent coffee grinders, even those made specifically for home use, cost a very pretty penny - we’re talking hundreds of dollars. ![]() ![]() And your beans won’t be any good at all if you’re not grinding them yourself right before brewing. And as any actual coffee snob will tell you (trust me, I’ve talked with a lot of them), your coffee is only going to be as good as your beans. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a particularly good one. Give me a cup - pretty much any old cup - and I won’t complain. ![]() ![]() ![]() Double the telescope aperture and you double the range at which the system can achieve a given spot size and zap intensity.īut a further proviso is that the largest practical laser installation and optical system are in fact large enough that you can only conveniently mount one aboard a spacecraft that is itself of practical size for war service. The general argument for all this is that the effective range of a laser is in linear proportion to the aperture of its optical system. Instead it is 'keel-mounted,' and gross aim is achieved by pointing the entire spacecraft toward the target. ![]() In either case, however, the optical system of a laserstar is implicitly too big, relative to the whole spacecraft, to be mounted in some equivalent of a turret. My impression is that the main telescope becomes long and narrow instead of short and wide. If you have lasers zapping in the far UV or X-ray bands, the aiming optics become quite different. ![]() It is this telescope, more than the individual laser itself, that provides the distinctive feature of a 'laser cannon' - if the available power is more than a single laser can handle you could easily have an entire bank of lasers all firing through the same optical system. In conceptualizing laserstars I chiefly have in mind classical-style lasers operating broadly in the optical band (IR through UV), whose beams are passed through telescope-style aiming and focusing optics. In their 'ideal' form they would be drones, robotic in the broad sense that includes remote control from a separate command ship (or ground station, etc.).Ī couple of provisos are needed. Laserstars, as the term has come to be used on this blog, are military spacecraft designed to carry and deploy a single powerful weapon laser installation of the maximum practical aperture and power. (And an arguably wretched pun in the title.) Much of the comment thread on Part XIII of this series, The Human Factor, turned into a discussion of 'laserstars.' While a thread of 631 comments (so far) might seem to have given this particular debate the full Rasputin treatment, I am instead going to use it as a pretext for another front page post. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is just one way to implement a latch using NOT, NAND, and NOR gates. > When S is 0 and R is 1, the latch is reset (the Q output is 0 and the Q' output is > When both S and R are 0, the latch maintains its current state (either set or reset). > When S is 1 and R is 0, the latch is set (the Q output is 1 and the Q' output is 0). The output of the first NAND gate is connected to the Q output, and the output of the second NAND gate is connected to the Q' output. The Q' output is connected to a second NAND gate along with the R input. The S input is connected to a NAND gate along with the Q output. Using these gates, we can implement a latch as follows: ![]() It performs a NOT-OR operation, meaning that the output is 1 if all of the inputs are 0, and 0 if any of the inputs are 1. The NOR gate also has two or more inputs and a single output. It performs a NOT-AND operation, meaning that the output is 1 if any of the inputs are 0, and 0 if all of the inputs are 1. The NAND gate has two or more inputs and a single output. It inverts the value at the input, so if the input is 1, the output is 0, and if the input is 0, the output is 1. The NOT gate has a single input and a single output. Here is an example of how a latch can be implemented using NOT, NAND, and NOR gates: The outputs are the stored values, and the inputs are used to control the stored values.Ī latch can be implemented using a variety of different gates, such as NOT gates, NAND gates, and NOR gates. It consists of two inputs (S and R) and two outputs (Q and Q'). A latch is a type of digital circuit that is used to store and maintain a binary value (either 0 or 1). ![]() ![]() ![]() There are plenty of aftermarket grips, and on this particular CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1, I’ve recently changed out the grip to the Yetiwurks. Most people say the first thing they change out on their Scorpion is either the safety selector I mentioned above and the grip. The grip is at an almost 60-degree angle, and that 60-degree angle is a very non-fluid angle for holding firearms. Personally, I picked up the CZ Scorpion grip by YetiWurks because I liked the design, and they also color-matched it to the same gray as this particular Scorpion EVO 3 S1. HB Industries also makes an AK-style selector, as well as a few other options. However, based on where the safety is placed, you really don’t mind losing the ambidextrous safety to have a more comfortable shooting experience. HB Industries makes a safety delete button, and the safety delete removes the lever on the right-hand side, effectively making this not an ambidextrous safety. On the right-hand side of the gun, typically for right-handed shooters, it’s going to poke into your trigger finger.Įven when the trigger finger is on the trigger itself, you’re still going to be getting hit by the safety. The issue with the safety is, is when the gun is in the fire position. The safety of the Scorpion is probably, other than the grip, the most contentious or disliked thing on the firearm. Price Check: Botach | Sportsman’s Warehouse | Sportsman’s Guide | PSA | Primary Arms | Impact Guns Safety I usually slide my hand all the way to the front and use the hand stop basically as a stop in the forward position instead of in the pullback position. I usually run this gun suppressed, so I don’t want to bump my suppressor accidentally. So I don’t slide my hand too far toward the end of the gun. I actually use it as a hand stop in the forward position. Mine is the gray model, but there’s an all-black model as well. The EVO 3 S1 does come with a black hand stop. Holding the Scorpion EVO 3 S1 in the C-Clamp style grip does seem to feel really good. To me, it does feel better to hold it at the magazine well, which is typically a pretty big no-no, especially when you’re shooting ARs. ![]() The grip ergonomics of the CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 pistol are somewhat iffy, mostly revolving around the pistol grip.Īside from the grip, the front of the gun, holding it in a C Clamp configuration, feels great. This particular model has a folding SB Tactical brace. The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 pistol comes with metal iron sights attached to the top rail of the gun. It is relatively ambidextrous, at least with the safety. The gun features a top Picatinny rail and three Picatinny rails on the front at the handguard’s three, six, and nine o’clock positions. The EVO is a small, compact pistol caliber carbine chambered to 9mm. It doesn’t appear to be very durable on the outside, but it does look very aesthetically pleasing. The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 pistol, at first glance, is a fascinating gun that is almost entirely polymer. At just $849, it’s a whole lot of bang for the buck.19 Overall Thoughts CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol Overview The most impressive stat on the Scorpion Pistol is the price tag. Our favorite accessory for the Scorpion pistol is our new arm brace adapter, which quickly and easily adds an AR-style pistol buffer tube to the rear of the action, enabling the use of an arm brace for added stability. Simple and reliable, the Scorpion not only has ambidextrous controls, its non-reciprocating charging handle is swappable and reach to the trigger is adjustable. The sights ride on an 11” Picatinny rail perfect for mounting optics. Equipped with our newly designed low-profile sights, its rear sight has four different aperture sizes for everything from close quarters to way out there. Imported as a pistol, it is a blowback-operated semi-auto in 9mm with a short 7¾” barrel. With the new Sig Arm brace, this can stay classified as a pistol but have 99% of a rifles functionality.įinally available for public consumption is the much anticipated Scorpion sub-gun. 223/5.56 and 300BLK rifles have dominated the home defense and tactical scene for recent history, the Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) has a long history of pulling it's weight. Whether as a pistol, a pistol with a Sig Brace ir an SBR, this is a bad ass little gun! The best part is that it is going to have a very affordable price, CZ is saying $849 MSRP that will put the street price $100-$200 less! The “bruja” has many definitions and roles within the Afro-Cuban, LatinX and indigenous populations of Central and South America. “Bruja” is a Spanish word that roughly translates as “witch,” but the role that brujas and the paranormal play in the production is broader than that. “We do tell ghost stories,” replied Fernandez. “Rosa is definitely the bruja and I am definitely the skeptic,” said Amon in a recent joint telephone interview.
